Can a wedding dress be a carry-on? Nine airlines' rules
TSA lets a wedding dress through security and recommends checking with your airline on how it "fits into their carry-on bag limitations". Of the nine airlines we read, Qantas and British Airways count it toward your normal cabin allowance, and Air Transat takes it "as a personal item". Our pick is a soft garment bag that fits your airline's row below, folded or rolled. What you give up is cabin allowance meant for clothes on most of these airlines, and only British Airways and Air Transat mention hanging it.
Wedding dress carry-on rules for 9 airlines
Six of these airlines mention a wedding dress or outfit by name. The other three have a garment-bag rule that says where the bag fits in the cabin allowance. Each cell quotes the airline, and a "not stated" cell means the page we read was silent on that point.
| Airline | Names a wedding dress? | How it counts, in their words | Size as printed | Hanging space | Source, read date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qantas | Yes: its example is "a wedding dress or suit bag." | "Non-rigid garment bags must be placed under the seat in front or in the overhead lockers, and count towards your carry-on allowance." | "114cm (44in) height x 60cm (23in) width x 11cm (4in) depth" | Not stated | Qantas carry-on baggage, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| Air Canada | Yes | "Wedding dresses can be carried on board and stored in the overhead bin provided the garment bag does not exceed maximum carry-on limits." Also: "we cannot guarantee space in the cabin." | Not stated | Not stated | Air Canada carry-on baggage, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| British Airways | Yes | "You can take your wedding dress, morning suit or bridesmaid dress as part of your hand baggage as long as it does not exceed your hand baggage allowance (i.e. number, size and weight of bags)." | Not stated | Long haul: "ask your cabin crew if there's any space to hang your wedding dress or suit and they will do their best to help, though there is limited available hanging space on board, especially on busy flights." Short haul: "you won't be able to hang your wedding outfit as there is no available wardrobe space onboard." | British Airways packing tips, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| easyJet | Yes, a "wedding outfit" | "If you'd like to bring a wedding outfit on board, you'll need to have a large cabin bag allowance." That allowance "is included with easyJet Plus, our Inclusive Plus and Smart+ fares, or it can be purchased separately." | "Garment bags for wedding outfits don't need to meet our usual cabin bag dimensions as long as they can be folded and stored easily." | Not stated | easyJet restricted and unusual items, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| Air Transat | Yes | "The wedding dress may be carried in the cabin as a personal item". Its table gives "1 per person" and "Free within size, piece, and weight limits". | "135 x 60 cm (53 x 23.5 in)", in "a non-rigid garment bag" | "There are no closet facilities on board our aircraft." | Air Transat baggage, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| United | Yes, among items people buy a seat for | Not stated for the cabin allowance. For a seat: "you can buy an extra seat and take them on the plane with you", and "A United agent must approve all items before boarding." | Not stated | Not stated | United seats for bags, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| American | No | "Soft-sided garment bag" is listed under "Carry-on items" | "51 inches (130 cm) in total dimensions (length + width + height)" | Not stated | American carry-on bags, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| Emirates | No | "First Class and Business Class passengers are permitted two pieces of carry-on baggage: one briefcase plus either one handbag or one garment bag, all subject to the following size and weight limitations:" | "Garment bag: 20 cm (8 inches) thick when folded"; "The weight of each piece must not exceed 7kg (15lbs)." | Not stated | Emirates baggage FAQ, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| Southwest | No | Free: "one carryon bag (e.g., roller bag, garment bag, tote bag)" | Its carry-on policy page: "Size limit: 24” (length) × 16” (width) × 10” (height)." The fees page prints "10 x 16 x 24" with no unit | Not stated | Southwest fees page and carry-on policy, read 18 Oct 2026 |
Emirates' rule is for First and Business only; by our reading, the garment bag takes the handbag's place there, and the page doesn't say what Economy passengers can do with one. Alaska Airlines isn't in the table, because we didn't find a garment-bag or dress rule on its baggage policy pages. A 2016 post on Alaska Airlines' news blog (Apr 27, 2016), not its baggage policy, says: "Follow these steps if you choose to carry your dress onboard the aircraft, which Alaska Airlines strongly recommends." The same post says: "If there is room, the flight attendants may offer to hang your dress in an onboard closet, but keep in mind that space is limited."
What TSA says at security
This applies at US airports. TSA's What Can I Bring? page on wedding dresses, last updated April 17, 2017, says: "You can bring a wedding dress through the security checkpoint for screening, but we strongly recommend that it is packed safely in a garment-style bag or other packaging to protect it during the screening process." It adds: "We also recommend that you contact your airline to determine their policy for bringing and stowing the dress on the airplane, as well as how it fits into their carry-on bag limitations." If the dress won't fit through the x-ray, TSA says "alternate screening procedures will be taken to clear the dress and your garment bag will need to be opened."
Does it count as your carry-on or your personal item?
Sorted by each airline's own words:
- Part of the normal allowance: Qantas ("count towards your carry-on allowance") and British Airways ("as part of your hand baggage"). Air Canada takes it in the bin "provided the garment bag does not exceed maximum carry-on limits".
- A personal item: Air Transat.
- A large cabin bag allowance, included with some fares or bought: easyJet.
- A seat bought for it: United.
- A garment bag listed with carry-on items: American, under "Carry-on items"; Emirates, as one of two pieces in First and Business; Southwest, as an example of "one carryon bag".
If the dress uses your carry-on, the rest has to fit the under-seat bag. What goes in your personal item vs carry-on covers that split.
Where it goes on the plane
Air Canada and Air Transat name the overhead bin; Air Transat says the dress "can be laid out or gently rolled up in the overhead bin". easyJet points to "a garment bag that can be stored in the overhead lockers", and Qantas allows under the seat in front or the overhead lockers. On hanging, British Airways long haul says to ask the crew and its short-haul flights have "no available wardrobe space", while Air Transat has "no closet facilities"; none of the other seven pages mention hanging space.
Worked example: a dress on a British Airways short-haul flight
Our plan for a European wedding reached on a British Airways short-haul flight:
- Which rule applies. British Airways says the dress goes "as part of your hand baggage", within the usual allowance. So the garment bag is one of your hand-baggage pieces and counts toward the number, size and weight of bags like any other.
- Hanging. On short haul, British Airways says there is "no available wardrobe space onboard". The dress travels folded in its bag.
- What else fits. Check the British Airways row in carry-on limits by airline for the number, size and weight of bags, then plan the rest of the trip around what the garment bag leaves.
- Packing. British Airways asks you to "Make sure your outfit is packed appropriately into your hand baggage." Our pick is a soft garment bag.
Packing it, our suggestions: we'd use a soft garment bag, folded or rolled the way Air Transat and easyJet describe, and TSA recommends a garment-style bag for screening too. Measure the bag packed, not empty, against your airline's row. For suits and a garment roller on a work trip, see which carry-on for a business trip.
