How do you measure a bag for airline carry-on size limits?

By · Updated · General packing guidance

Measure the bag fully packed, with a tape measure, standing on the floor: height to the top of the handle, width at the widest point, and depth including stuffed front pockets. Airline limits are outside dimensions, usually including wheels and handles. Compare those numbers with your exact fare, not a generic “carry-on size.”

What the airline counts

Airlines measure the outside of the whole bag. American Airlines, for example, says its carry-on limit of 56 × 36 × 23 cm (22 × 14 × 9 in) includes handles and wheels, and easyJet says the same for its free under-seat bag of 45 × 36 × 20 cm. Both were checked on the airlines’ own sites on 6 October 2026.

So the number that counts includes:

How to measure, step by step

For a quick home sizer, cut a cardboard box to your airline’s limit, or mark the limit on the floor against a wall with tape, and see if the packed bag fits without forcing it.

Apps can help but don’t replace a tape measure. easyJet offers a camera sizing tool in its iOS app and still says on its own site that the best way to know is to measure with a tape measure before you travel.

Why the spec sheet can be wrong

Listed dimensions are often for the bag empty, or for the main body only. Soft bags grow several centimeters in depth when full, and expansion zips add more. Liters tell you nothing about fit: two bags with the same volume can have very different shapes. Treat the listing as a starting point and your own packed measurement as the real number.

Does squishing a soft bag into the sizer work?

A little, and only if the bag is under-packed. A frameless bag with some empty space can be pressed a centimeter or two thinner. It cannot make a bag several centimeters narrower, and a padded back panel, a frame sheet, or a stiff zip track won’t compress at all.

Here’s where squishing stops working: a 45 × 36 × 20 cm backpack that is perfect for easyJet’s free under-seat allowance, taken on Ryanair, whose free small bag is 40 × 30 × 20 cm. That’s 5 cm too tall and 6 cm too wide. No amount of squishing closes that gap. Ryanair’s own bag rules say a bag that doesn’t fit its sizers will be refused at the gate or placed in the hold for a fee.

Some gate agents check every bag and some wave people through. You can’t know in advance, so don’t plan around leniency. If you fly several airlines, buy for the strictest one, or keep a cheap fold-flat bag that fits the smallest allowance. For the full underseat-only approach, see how to pack with only a personal item.

Hard shells and rollers

A hard-shell case won’t flex, so every millimeter counts. If the listed width is 36.5 cm and the sizer is 36 cm, it won’t go in. Measure rollers including the wheels and handle housing, and be wary of models listed right at the limit. Backpack vs wheeled carry-on covers the other trade-offs.

If your packed bag is over

If you are shopping for a new bag, check its packed depth in owner reviews first. The deep guide on how to choose a carry-on travel backpack explains what else to check.

Size limits, sizer enforcement, and fees vary by airline, fare, and airport, and they change. The examples here were read from the airlines’ own pages in October 2026. Confirm your fare before you fly.

FAQ

Do airline size limits include wheels and handles?

Usually, yes. Airlines such as American Airlines and easyJet state that their cabin bag limits include handles and wheels. Measure the whole bag from the floor to the top of the handle.

Is 22 × 14 × 9 inches the standard carry-on size?

It is common on US airlines (American Airlines uses 22 × 14 × 9 in, or 56 × 36 × 23 cm), but it is not universal. European and low-cost airlines use different limits, and some fares include only a small under-seat bag.

Should I measure my backpack empty or full?

Full. A soft bag can gain several centimeters of depth when packed, and the airline measures what you bring to the gate.

What happens if my bag does not fit the sizer?

It depends on the airline. Some will put it in the hold for a fee at the gate; some refuse it. Paying for a larger allowance online in advance is usually cheaper than paying at the gate.
