Five of the six ferry operators we read print a 50 kg luggage ceiling rather than a bag size (Seajets: "hand luggage up to 50 kg or 1 m³"). Minoan prints "56x 45 x 25 cm" for its International Lines. At Meteora, GNTO lists "tops that cover the shoulders, long trousers for men, and long skirts for women". Our pick is the cabin bag your airline allows plus one long, light layer. The trade-off is on Minoan's international crossings: extra bags can cost "10 euro per piece of luggage".

## Ferry luggage rules, operator by operator

We read the luggage terms of six ferry companies on their own sites, all on 19 Oct 2026. Five print a 50 kg luggage line, and only Minoan Lines prints a bag size, for its International Lines. Each one is quoted below in its own words.

### Seajets, Blue Star, Hellenic Seaways, ANEK and Golden Star

Seajets' General Terms say: "Passengers are entitled to carry hand luggage up to 50 kg or 1 m³." Its FAQ gives the same ceiling as "up to 50 kg or 1 cubic metre". The General Terms also say: "Transport of explosives, flammable, incendiary, or otherwise dangerous materials is strictly prohibited." Seajets doesn't take responsibility for belongings unless they are "deposited for safekeeping at the Purser's Office".

Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and ANEK each print the same luggage wording in their General Conditions for the Cyclades, Dodecanese, N. Aegean, Saronic islands and Crete: "Passengers are entitled to carry free of charge, luggage up to 50 kilos or 1m³." Before that line they say: "Luggage should be placed in the designated areas of the vessels as per the crew's instructions." Golden Star's Ticket Terms say: "Passengers are entitled to carry baggage up to 50 kg."

By our reading, these lines cap what each passenger brings aboard, and the five pages give a weight or a volume where a bag size would go. A 50 kg ceiling doesn't make a 50 kg bag a carry-on: the cabin limit on your flight is far smaller (see the [airline cabin-bag table](https://onebagkit.com/carry-on-size-and-weight-limit-by-airline/index.md)), and the flight is what sets the real limit.

### Minoan Lines: domestic lines and International Lines, kept apart

Minoan's baggage page has a separate block for each. Under its domestic heading, Minoan says: "Luggage may be left inside the vehicles. Passengers are kindly requested to take their personal belongings that might be used during the voyage." It adds that access to the garage "during the voyage is prohibited." Money and valuables are Minoan's responsibility only after "checking them at the Purser's office after an agreement for safe keeping", and the domestic block doesn't give a bag size or a fee.

For its International Lines (Greece to Italy), Minoan says: "Each passenger may carry aboard the vessel, without any supplement being charged, unchecked baggage containing exclusively personal items, within the size limits specified below: 56x 45 x 25 cm, for each passenger who has booked an armchair or who is travelling on the bridge passage or in a cabin." Each passenger also "may take a small bag or backpack with them on board the vessel at no extra charge."

Beyond that, "With the exception of the lines in agreement", more luggage "is subject to the payment of a supplement equal to 10 euro per piece of luggage, to be paid during boarding". Bags outside the free allowance and not in a vehicle "will be stowed in the luggage compartment of the vessel", and Minoan says "It will not be possible to access the stored luggage" during the crossing. The page mentions "weight and volume limits" but doesn't print a weight.

## What to wear at the Meteora monasteries

The Greek National Tourism Organisation's site, visitgreece.gr, sums up the rules for visiting the monasteries (read 19 Oct 2026):

> "During your visit, it is important to respect the dress code and behaviour expected in monasteries: tops that cover the shoulders, long trousers for men, and long skirts for women."

> "For visitors not appropriately dressed, monasteries typically provide long skirts and scarves at the entrance."

By our reading, a long skirt or long trousers and a top with sleeves belong in the bag for the Meteora day. The skirts and scarves at the door are what monasteries "typically provide", which isn't a guarantee for every door. Each monastery sets its own rules, and they can differ from GNTO's summary. The same GNTO page says "Wear comfortable shoes", because "Access to the monasteries involves staircases and uphill walking, with the exception of the Monastery of Agios Stefanos, which is more accessible." The walking shoes you travel in cover it; the [shoe guide](https://onebagkit.com/how-many-shoes-to-pack/index.md) explains the one spare pair. On timing, the same page says: "During the summer months, temperatures are high, while in winter, the weather conditions do not favour hiking, as the trails can become slippery." By our reading, that bears on your shoes if you add the hiking trails to the monastery day.

## A ten-day plan: Athens, Santorini, Crete and the boat to Italy

This example route shows where each rule applies; check crossing times with each operator.

1. Fly into Athens with the cabin bag inside your airline's limit.
2. Seajets from Piraeus to Santorini, then on to Heraklion. The bag is far below Seajets' "50 kg or 1 m³" ceiling.
3. Minoan from Heraklion back to Piraeus, a domestic line. On foot, the bag stays with you. With a car, take out what you'll need on board before you drive on: Minoan prohibits access to the garage during the voyage.
4. Meteora. Long trousers or the long skirt and a sleeved top go on for the monastery day.
5. Optional ending: Minoan from Igoumenitsa to Ancona or Brindisi, an International Line. With an armchair, bridge passage or cabin booking, the cabin bag rides free if it is within "56x 45 x 25 cm", and so does the small backpack. Anything more goes to the luggage compartment and, outside Minoan's "lines in agreement", pays the per-piece supplement. The [Italy carry-on list](https://onebagkit.com/carry-on-packing-list-italy/index.md) picks up from there.
