Wear the suit jacket and dress shoes on the plane, put non-iron shirts and folded trousers in one soft carry-on within the airline's size limit, and carry the laptop in a slim laptop bag as your personal item. That's our pick for three or four days of meetings in one jacket; the price is flying in the jacket and carrying two bags. Check the fare first: United Basic Economy allows only the personal item unless you're flying across the Atlantic or Pacific or to South America.

## Worked example: Chicago to San Francisco on United, Monday to Thursday

![An open charcoal travel backpack holding folded dress shirts and suit trousers in a dry-cleaner bag, with a navy suit jacket draped over a slim laptop bag beside it and brown slip-on dress shoes in front.](https://onebagkit.com/img/brick-spot-business-trip-carry-on-packing-640.webp)

An example plan: United from Chicago O'Hare to San Francisco, out on Monday 9 November 2026 and back on Thursday 12 November. The dress code is a suit for client meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the same suit for a team dinner on Tuesday night, and business casual on Thursday before the evening flight home. That makes three nights and two suit days.

Start with the ticket. A standard Economy fare on United includes one carry-on up to 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 35 × 23 cm) including wheels and handles, one personal item up to 17 × 10 × 9 in (43 × 25 × 22 cm), and a jacket or coat on top of both, according to [United's carry-on page](https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/baggage/carry-on-bags.html) (checked 8 October 2026). Basic Economy on a domestic route like this one allows the personal item only. For tickets bought on or after 3 April 2026, the bag then has to be checked, from $45 each way if you prepay and $75 at the gate: $90 for the round trip at the prepaid rate. Premier members, Star Alliance Gold members and primary holders of a qualifying MileagePlus card still get a free carry-on in Basic Economy.

On a standard fare, the kit splits like this:

| Item | Where it rides | Days it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Navy suit jacket | Worn on both flights over a T-shirt; folded on top in the bin | Tue and Wed meetings, Tue dinner |
| Suit trousers | Carry-on, folded once, on top inside a dry-cleaner bag | Tue and Wed |
| Chinos and belt | Worn out on Monday and home on Thursday | Mon, Thu |
| 2 non-iron dress shirts | Carry-on, buttoned and folded | Tue, Wed |
| 1 polo | Carry-on | Thu |
| 4 T-shirts or undershirts | 1 worn, 3 in the carry-on | One a day, under each dress shirt |
| 4 underwear, 4 pairs of socks | Carry-on, one cube | One a day |
| Light sweater | Carry-on, near the top | Cold planes and meeting rooms |
| Dress shoes | Worn on both flights | All four days |
| Toiletries | Carry-on; liquids at 3.4 oz / 100 mL each in one quart-size bag | All four days |
| Laptop, charger, cables, stain pen | Laptop bag (personal item) | All four days |
| Medication, keys, ID | Laptop bag (personal item) | All four days |

The laptop bag holds what you need with you if the carry-on ends up in the hold. United's page tells passengers to keep medication, keys and other essentials in the personal item in case the carry-on is gate-checked, and [Independent_Guava545](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p39xian/), a commenter in [r/onebag's thread on work trips that need real clothes](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/) who flies to week-long conferences, has had a laptop gate-checked. A second reason for two bags came from [ReeRunner](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3cdymw/) in the same thread: "I’m not carrying the bag I pack all my clothes in to work every day." The laptop is the heaviest thing in it; a 13-inch MacBook Air weighs 1.23 kg ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/macbook-air/specs/)).

## Getting the suit there without creases

Wear the jacket. A reply in the same r/onebag thread put it in one line: "If you need a suit or a jacket you wear it for travel." ([w2best](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p39uogt/)). Another commenter wears it over a T-shirt: "I wear a t shirt and sport coat on my flight, fold and put up top when boarding or hold on lap." ([chambros703](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3arc1s/)). Because United lets a jacket or coat ride outside the bag allowance, the jacket takes no space in either bag.

Wearing the whole suit on the plane has a cost. The poster of an [r/ManyBaggers thread on fitting a suit into a carry-on](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/), who needed it for two days of meetings on a four-day trip, objected that wearing it "means sitting in it for a flight and then walking into a meeting in it". The example plan splits the difference: jacket on, trousers packed, folded once along the crease and laid on top of the other clothes inside a dry-cleaner bag. [Marshmallow_64](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/p3uno76/) recommends that plastic layer because "This reduces the friction if the suit rubs against itself during the trip."

If the jacket has to go in the bag, [EChrisG](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/p3t5po8/) uses the inversion fold (one shoulder turned inside out and nested in the other) and puts "the jacket and trousers in a slim packing cube all by themselves". Their suit came through two-day trips in a bag of about 25 L without bad creases. Budget the room for it: on a [one-week trip to Chicago with a 22 L bag](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1klshi4/one_week_business_trip/), the poster found "the suit jacket took up 2.5L on its own".

Count shirts by meeting days. A commenter who says they are a former airline pilot gets two days from each shirt: "wear a fresh undershirt everyday, then you can get at least 2 days out of the shirt" ([largemargesentme__-](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3etcw5/)). In the example plan, two dress shirts cover Tuesday and Wednesday with a spare day each. Pick fabrics that skip the iron. One reply says "Avoid cotton and linen" ([eastercat](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p39njab/)), and another packs non-iron dress shirts and hangs them in the shower ([Tjgoodwiniv](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3clfx4/)). Mizzen+Main, a shirt brand two commenters across these threads name, makes the Leeward: 88% polyester and 12% spandex, $158, and sold as "Ready to wear with no prep" ([Mizzen+Main](https://www.mizzenandmain.com/products/white-solid-leeward-dress-shirt)).

Unpack as soon as you check in. [Octagontheory](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/p3rfi5k/), who travels weekly with suits in a roller carry-on, keeps the jacket out of the case until the last minute and hangs everything on arrival. Travel steamers split the r/ManyBaggers thread: [Cedosg](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/p3w5hbf/) carries a small one, while [Careless_Law1471](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/p3t0ix9/) warns that on a high-quality suit "you'll destroy the layers of fabrics in the lapels". Pack a stain pen as well; [BillyBuckets](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p65f4x6/) learned that lesson in a gray coat at a mixer that served BBQ wings.

## Which carry-on: garment roller or travel pack

The Briggs & Riley and the Matador both come up in these threads, and the Aer is the newer version of the Travel Pack 3 Small that the nomad poster below carried before switching. Here they are against United's 56 × 35 × 23 cm, at prices listed on 8 October 2026:

| Bag | Size against United's 56 × 35 × 23 cm | Empty weight | Price | Fits best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Briggs & Riley Baseline 22" Carry-on 2-Wheel Garment Bag](https://www.briggs-riley.com/products/carry-on-upright-garment-bag-1), 36.74 L | 22 × 14 × 9 in, exactly United's limit in inches. In cm (55.9 × 35.6 × 22.9) the width is 0.6 cm over United's 35 cm, which is 14 in rounded down | 4.5 kg | $699 | Weekly trips in a suit, jacket packed |
| [Matador SEG45 Hybrid Travel Pack](https://www.matadorequipment.com/products/45l-seg-hybrid-travel-pack), 45 L | 57 × 32 × 28 cm: 1 cm taller and 5 cm deeper than the limit; Matador says it "may not strictly adhere to all relevant airline size policies" | 1,049 g | $199 | Trips where it rides part-full; packed out, it's deeper than United allows |
| [Aer Travel Pack 4 28L](https://aersf.com/products/travel-pack-4-28l), 28 L | 49 × 32 × 20 cm: 7, 3 and 3 cm inside the limit | 1.6 kg | $239 | Three or four days with the jacket worn |

For the example plan we'd take a travel pack in the Aer's size class. It's inside United's limit on every side, weighs 2.9 kg less than the Briggs & Riley, and its main compartment opens flat like a suitcase. The cost is volume: at 28 L against the Briggs & Riley's 36.74 L, the jacket goes on you for the flight, and a second jacket for a longer trip goes in folded. The nomad poster below dropped the Travel Pack 3 Small "Mostly because of bulk and weight" ([darkawower](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1t5fzym/3_years_of_fulltime_onebag_travel_from_15kg_to_a/okc65xi/)); that cost bites harder over years under a 7 kg limit than on a three-night work trip on United, which doesn't publish a carry-on weight limit. The Briggs & Riley is worth its 4.5 kg for someone who flies in a T-shirt and packs the jacket every week, though [Cedosg](https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/1vop8ol/is_there_a_realistic_way_to_pack_my_suit_in_my/p3re01s/) found its garment section still creased a suit once the bag was full: "it works if you don't fill it much but if you do and use the compression system, it will wrinkle quite badly". To fold shirts flat inside any of the three, use a packing folder; the [cubes and folders guide](https://onebagkit.com/packing-cubes-vs-packing-folders/index.md) covers the sizes.

For longer trips, add a jacket before you add a bag. For three weeks of work, [LadyLightTravel](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vqv5hc/how_do_i_pack_for_three_weeks_with_just_one_bag/p48hv6g/) suggests: "Wear one blazer and pack a second unlined one. Unlined blazers pack smaller." The same commenter flew in their dress shoes because they were the least packable item ([LadyLightTravel](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3a3lsx/)); the [shoes guide](https://onebagkit.com/how-many-shoes-to-pack/index.md) covers whether a second pair is worth packing.

## When to check a bag, send clothes ahead, or stay carry-on only

Carry-on only stops working when the dress code outgrows one jacket. A commenter in [r/onebag's three-week work-trip thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vqv5hc/how_do_i_pack_for_three_weeks_with_just_one_bag/) checked a bag because the trip required "two full changes of professional clothes" ([SomePeopleCallMeJJ](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vqv5hc/how_do_i_pack_for_three_weeks_with_just_one_bag/p48iu9o/)). Another, with four days of blazers or suits, packs an MLC carry-on, a Pliqo garment folder for the second jacket and an underseater for the day ([Electrical_Carob_699](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p39e7gd/)). Heat changes the sums too: [Angle_Of_The_Sangle](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3bro2o/) checked a bag for a humid four-day resort event with long walks between sessions, and was glad of the spare clothes to change into halfway through the day.

Two practical arguments favour checking. [Plus_Cantaloupe_3793](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vqv5hc/how_do_i_pack_for_three_weeks_with_just_one_bag/p4ay42y/) wrote: "If you’re travelling for work your employer should be paying for luggage". [cjwalkerman](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vqv5hc/how_do_i_pack_for_three_weeks_with_just_one_bag/p4bvq3h/), who travels for work at least 15 times a year, added that "travel stress is often 'heavier' than carrying an extra bag". A third route skips the airline: [JabbaTheHedgeHog](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1vmh8uf/how_do_you_handle_a_work_trip_that_needs_real/p3j41h4/) sends a box of formal clothes to the hotel by FedEx, because "On the corporate account, it’s cheaper than checking a bag".

The argument for carry-on only is rebooking speed. On a [six-day business trip from Europe to Ottawa and Dallas in a 26 L bag](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1uvfhfl/longhaul_onebag_trip_europe_ottawa_dallas_6_days/), the poster's return flight was cancelled; with no baggage desk or carousel in the way, they "Pivoted in 10 minutes and had a good steak instead." The same packing list carried a universal EU-to-US adapter and a light sweater, with the note "North American AC is merciless". Liquids rules change between countries, so check the [liquids guide](https://onebagkit.com/what-counts-as-a-liquid-airport-security/index.md) before an international trip.

## Digital nomads: the same kit under a 7 kg limit

Remote workers carry the office in the bag, and on AirAsia the limit is weight as well as size. AirAsia allows two cabin pieces with a combined weight of 7 kg: a cabin bag up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm and a small bag up to 40 × 30 × 10 cm ([AirAsia support](https://support.airasia.com/s/article/What-are-the-rules-for-cabin-baggage-on-board), article dated 13 April 2026, checked 8 October 2026).

Take the kit from an [r/onebag post on three years of full-time one-bag travel](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1t5fzym/3_years_of_fulltime_onebag_travel_from_15kg_to_a/). The poster is a software developer whose countries include Malaysia, and by their own scale the packed Osprey Daylite Expandable 26+6 weighs 7,722 g and the sling 1,380 g. Together that's 9,102 g, 2,102 g over AirAsia's 7 kg. The 14-inch MacBook Pro alone is 1,600 g, 22.9% of the allowance. The poster has weighed the obvious fix, writing "I could also switch to a 13" laptop." ([darkawower](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1t5fzym/3_years_of_fulltime_onebag_travel_from_15kg_to_a/oke5ufb/)), though for now performance holds them back ([darkawower](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1t5fzym/3_years_of_fulltime_onebag_travel_from_15kg_to_a/omwfgrt/)). Even so, a 13-inch MacBook Air at 1.23 kg saves only 370 g and leaves the kit at 8,732 g, still 1,732 g over.

A laptop swap doesn't close a 2 kg gap, so the choice is buying weight or carrying less. AirAsia sells up to 3 kg of extra cabin weight at the airport counter, to a maximum of 10 kg in total, which covers the full 9,102 g kit. Its Xtra Carry-On add-on has to be booked on the AirAsia MOVE app or website at least 2 hours before departure. The [7 kg guide](https://onebagkit.com/carry-on-weight-limit-7kg/index.md) breaks down how to divide that allowance.

The harder question for remote work is the desk. Asked what they miss, the same poster answered "the biggest thing I have always missed is having two monitors" ([darkawower](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1t5fzym/3_years_of_fulltime_onebag_travel_from_15kg_to_a/okav2vg/)), and said a stand and separate keyboard "take up quite a bit of space and weight". Before leaving, the poster tested the setup at home for a few weeks, and by the second week the workflow was back to normal. Running that test with your own laptop shows whether a stand or a portable monitor is worth its weight before it goes into a 7 kg bag.

## FAQ

### Does the laptop have to come out of the bag at airport security?

Yes in a standard US lane, unless it has one of the newer CT bag scanners. The TSA asks travellers to put laptops in a separate bin for X-ray screening, and PreCheck travellers can leave laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, shoes, belts and light jackets in place ([TSA](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/laptops), page updated 15 July 2026). At CT lanes, TSA's current procedure lets laptops stay in the bag ([TSA's CT page](https://www.tsa.gov/computed-tomography)). Pack the laptop at the back of the laptop bag so it slides out without unpacking anything else.
